Chocolate and oranges are a match made in heaven! This is literally the best chocolate cake recipe to make when celebrating a special occasion and you really can’t go wrong from tucking into a slice of a classic chocolate cake!
Preheat the oven to 160C and line a 6 inch cake tin with baking paper.
Sieve plain flour, cocoa powder, baking soda and salt in a bowl and mix well.
Add the apple cider vinegar to the milk and let it sit for 2 minutes. Then add the caster sugar and whisk until the sugar is dissolved.
Add the oil and whisk for about 5 minutes until the oil is no longer seen.
Add the liquid ingredients to the dry ingredients and whisk with a spatula so that the mixture is well combined.
Add the batter to a cake tin and cook for about 35-40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
Use a stand mixer to beat the butter on medium speed until butter becomes creamy, it usually takes about 5-8 minutes. Then add 100g of the icing sugar and beat for another 2 minutes and then add the cocoa powder and orange extract.
Add the remaining icing sugar and beat for another 2 minutes. Add more icing sugar or cocoa powder if the frosting is too thin or a tablespoon of milk if the frosting is too thick.
Add a layer of buttercream frosting in between each of the layers and then cover the outside of the cake with the frosting as well.
